The County Tipperary village of Clogheen, its name meaning ‘Little stone of the market’, lies just 3 miles from Shanbally Castle which was designed by John Nash in 1820 for Viscount Lismore. The village held its own racing meetings in the mid-1700s, the first of which extended over 5 days in Whit Week 1747 beginning on Monday 18th May. A year later the meeting ran from Monday 30th May 1748 for 5 days when the Hunters Plate was won by Mr Latham. In celebration of his success, Mr Latham sponsored the Hunters Plate on Thursday 25th May 1749 with £20 worth of Wool and Linen. By 1751 the meeting was deemed to be sufficiently important to be included in the ‘Historical List of Horse-Matches Run in 1751’. The five day meeting, spread over 6 days so that Tuesday could be reserved for hunting, began on Monday 27th May 1751 with a Purse worth £20 which was won after 3 heats by Mr Kissin’s The Heeler of Cashell. On Wednesday the £30 Prize was claimed by Sir Edward O’Brien’s Ranger at the expense of Batchelor, while Mr Moor captured the Real Hunters event on Thursday. The impressive black gelding Abelard won all 3 heats on Friday to reward Sir Edward with a much deserved success, and the concluding meeting on Saturday featured a £20 Plate which went to Wicklow Lass owned by Mr Jordan. In 1754 the meeting stretched over five days from 3rd to Friday 8th June, culminating in the 50 Guineas Purse for Gentlemen which was won by Mr Hyde’s Attalanta.
